Toyota Recall September 2009 Recently we’ve seen Toyota recalling almost a million cars because of faulty parts. Not a single weeks goes by without the Japanese car maker recalling cars somewhere in the world and it makes you wonder if these cars are good for anything. However this time is somewhat different as it’s the biggest Toyota recall in history with over 3.8 million cars having problems because of the floor mats. On August 28, four people in a Lexus crashed at over 120mph because of jammed accelerators caused by faulty floor mats.
This is not the first time it happens as the first problem was reported in 2004 with the Prius. Then in September 2007 Toyota recalled thousands of Toyota Camrys and Lexus ES 250s due to the all-weather mats. So far there were 102 reports and 13 crashes with 5 deaths and 17 injuries caused by Toyota and Lexus floor mats which ham the accelerator pedals.
As a desperate measure Toyota is urging all Toyota and Lexus drivers to remove the driver’s side floor mats and do not replace it with anything else and the car maker can come up with a solution to the floor mats.

Pregnant 12 Year Old Girl Missing: The search is getting more urgent for two missing sisters from Mooresville.
One of the girls is pregnant and needs medical attention, according to her mother.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says Keara and Sierra Hess have been missing since Wednesday.
The girls, who are 12 and 11, are believed to be with their adoptive father, Matthew Hess.
“We hope when we find them we get a lot of questions answered,” said Lt. Julie Gibson with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators say Hess left his estranged wife a note saying that he was taking Sierra to Lakeshore Middle School. The wife became suspicious when 12-year-old Keara didn’t make it to her doctor’s appointment.
“Since Thursday it’s been hell,” said Jeanette Hess, the girls’ mother. Keara is 8 1/2 months pregnant and needs a medical procedure to protect her child.
“There are some things we’ve heard from her physician that makes us very concerned. The baby needs medical attention right away,” said Gibson.
Hess and his two girls haven’t been seen since last Wednesday night.
“He didn’t pack to stay away for an extended period of time,” Gibson said. “He’s the girls’ legal father.”
This story has attracted national attention. Deputies are thankful for that because time may be running out for Keara’s baby. Phone calls have come in from all over the East Coast.
“Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Stokes County, N.C., Wadesboro — so we really don’t have much of a direction. We’re just trying to blanket as much as we can,” Gibson said.
It has been an emotional week for the mother of the girls.
“Please, please just drop them off. I just want the girls OK,” Jeanette Hess said.
Investigators think Matthew Hess may be driving a brown or tan 1993 Ford Explorer with North Carolina license plate YTE-8014. The back right passenger window is broken out and is covered with Plexiglass, which is duct-taped in place.

In the last two Champions Trophy tournaments, India failed to get to the knockout round. This time, given that they are tantalizingly close to the number one position, fans will be less tolerant of a poor performance.
The saving grace of Saturday’s loss was that the batsmen fought hard, not giving up even after an indifferent performance by the bowlers gave Pakistan over 300 runs.
While India versus Pakistan matches arouse the highest passions, the contest to watch now is India versus Australia. If any team consistently put Australia on the defensive in recent years, it was India.
The present Australian team has many inexperienced players and though they won’t fear the big stage, India have many men who can seize the moment. The moment of reckoning is here.
Artega GT, Yes, there’s a little Porsche Cayman there, and the Artega GT does have a 3.6-liter Volkswagen-sourced V-6 engine, so there is sort of a link to the family. But the styling, penned by Henrik Fisker, is cleaner than a Cayman. Fisker is, after all, the man responsible for much of the current look of the Aston Martin portfolio. Hardy Essig, a former Porsche engineer, helped develop the drivetrain.
Artega Gt And Hsv Grange, Performance, though, should not be that far removed from the Cayman S, if indeed the Artega GT comes in with the rumored 300 horsepower and a top speed in excess of 160 mph. Price is expected to be just under $100,000. Production, limited to 500 a year, is supposed to begin late in 2007, with sales starting in mid-2008. No word on whether there’s a U.S. importer waiting in the wings. The Artega GT is smaller and less luxury oriented than past Fisker designs, such as the Tramonto and Latigo CS (based on the Mercedes-Benz SL-class and BMW 6-series, respectively). This car represents a departure for the coachbuilder, but a decidedly successful one.

Redskins (1-1) at Lions (0-2), 1:00PM ET Don’t be shocked if the Lions end their massive losing streak today at home against a very average Redskins team. Thanks to Jim Zorn’s conservative play calling, Washington’s offense has become unimaginable and bland. If Matthew Stafford limits the turnovers, the Lions have a shot.
Packers (1-1) at Rams (0-2), 1:00PM ET St. Louis played well defensively last week and Green Bay has major issues along its offensive line – could this be an upset in the making? Probably not. The Rams’ offense has looked atrocious in the first two weeks of the season and although Dom Capers’ defense looked horrendous last week, the Packers should manage to beat a bad St. Louis team. (Although this game might be tighter than most expect.)
49ers (2-0) at Vikings (2-0), 1:00PM ET This is the only matchup in Week 3 that features two 2-0 teams. This game will be the Vikings’ first real challenge after earning victories against the lowly Browns and Lions in the first two weeks. The key for the 49ers will be stopping Adrian Peterson, because Brett Favre won’t find much success through the air against San Fran’s solid secondary. Can Shaun Hill make enough plays in the passing game to lead his team to victory once the Williams Wall takes away Frank Gore?
Falcons (2-0) at Patriots (1-1), 1:00PM ET This game will be a great test for both teams to see where they are at this point in the season. A win for the Falcons and they’ll be viewed as one of the elite teams in the NFC, while a loss for the Patriots means that it could be panic time for Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Conversely, if Atlanta loses then everyone will question whether or not the Falcons can beat the top teams in the league, while a win for New England will quiet some of the concerns surrounding the Pats.
Titans (0-2) at Jets (2-0), 1:00PM ET A loss for Tennessee would be shocking considering the Titans started 10-0 last year. Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez have the Jets playing with toughness, emotion and swagger. Will the Titans really fall to 0-3 to star the year? Or will they bring Ryan and Sanchez back down to earth after their hot start has everyone buzzing about the J.E.T.S?
Chiefs (0-2) at Eagles (1-1), 1:00PM ET Kansas City should be just what the doctor ordered for a Philadelphia team that was absolutely shredded by Drew Brees and the Saints last week. Kevin Kolb will get his second consecutive start filling in for the injured Donovan McNabb, although the Eagles did vow to get Michael Vick on the field in some capacity so keep an eye on that.
Giants (2-0) at Buccaneers (0-2), 1:00PM ET The Giants have major concerns on the defensive side of the ball due to injuries to Justin Tuck, Kenny Phillips, Aaron Ross and Chris Canty. The Bucs haven’t played well defensively so far this year, but they have moved the ball surprisingly well thanks to Byron Leftwich and Cadillac Williams. Will the G-Men’s injury issues hurt them today in Tampa?
Browns (0-2) at Ravens (2-0), 1:00PM ET Cleveland is having tons of problems moving the ball offensively, mainly because quarterback Brady Quinn doesn’t look comfortable throwing the ball vertically. Unfortunately for Quinn and the Browns, things don’t get any easier this week when they pay a trip to Baltimore to visit the undefeated Ravens. While Baltimore has issues in its secondary, the Ravens’ offense has had no problem putting points on the board in the first two weeks. The Browns haven’t played that bad defensively, but Joe Flacco and company shouldn’t have any problem securing a win today.
Jaguars (0-2) at Texans (1-1), 1:00PM ET So who are the real Texans? The ones that were crushed at home in Week 1 by the Jets or the ones that earned a hard-fought win in Tennessee in Week 2? Houston has a perfect chance to show the rest of the league that it can beat up on a bad opponent, because that’s exactly what Jacksonville is. The Jags still have the capability to move the ball offensively, but Jack Del Rio’s defense has major issues that Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton (who is off to a slow start) and Andre Johnson can exploit.
Bears (1-1) at Seahawks (1-1), 4:05PM ET It’ll be the Seneca Wallace show today in Seattle as he fills in for the injured Matt Hasselbeck (rib). The Hawks have looked like a different team under Wallace then Hasselbeck, so the Bears have a perfect opportunity to earn their second victory of the year. As long as Jay Cutler resembles the quarterback that helped Chicago beat the defending Super Bowl champions last week and not the one that was filthy awful in Green Bay in Week 1, the Bears should be fine.
Saints (2-0) at Bills (1-1), 4:05PM ET If it weren’t for Leodis McKelvin returning a kickoff instead of taking a knee late in the fourth quarter against the Patriots in Week 1, Buffalo would be 2-0 right now. The Bills will get a huge test today as Drew “MVP” Brees and the Saints’ explosive offense comes to Ralph Wilson Stadium. This is the second week where New Orleans will have to travel to the east coast, although nothing (not even the travel conditions) looks like it can slow the Saints’ offense. New Orleans’ defense is still a question mark, although if the Saints continue to score 40-plus points a game it won’t matter how bad Sean Payton’s squad plays defensively.
Steelers (1-1) at Bengals (1-1), 4:15PM ET Pittsburgh needs to put its ugly loss to Chicago behind it and pick up a big divisional win in Cincinnati. The Bengals looked great offensively last week in Green Bay and will get the chance to show that they’re going to be competitive this year. Can Carson Palmer move the ball against a stingy Steelers defense?
Broncos (2-0) at Raiders (1-1), 4:15PM ET It’s amazing to think by the end of the day Josh McDaniels’ Broncos could be 3-0. It’s amazing because this was a team in complete turmoil this offseason and is led by a very limited Kyle Orton. Denver’s defense has been fantastic so far and will face an inconsistent JaMarcus Russell today. Can the Bronco defense continue to play well or is this the week things start to come unglued?
Dolphins (0-2) at Chargers (1-1), 4:15PM ET This is a matchup of two playoff teams from a year ago that have issues at the start of this season. Miami can run the ball, but their loss to the Colts last Monday night proved that the Dolphins can’t win when they have to throw late. San Diego certainly has all the talent to succeed, but for some reason can’t seem to put it all together. Which team can overcome their weaknesses to earn a much-needed win?
Colts (2-0) at Cardinals (1-1), 8:20PM ET This will be an interesting test for Peyton Manning and the Colts, because the Cardinals have enough offensive firepower to hang with Indy’s up-tempo offense. Can the Colts continue to win by leaving their defense on the field all game? Will Indy force Kurt Warner to throw the ball vertically instead of relying on short, underneath passes like he did last week? This will be an intriguing game.
Panthers (0-2) at Cowboys (1-1), Monday, 8:30PM ET A loss would be devastating to the Panthers, who are already two games behind New Orleans and Atlanta in a tough NFC South. A loss for Dallas and the hot seat that Wade Phillips is currently sitting on will be on fire. Likewise for quarterback Tony Romo, who is coming off a brutal performance against the Giants in Week 2. Something has to give for two teams that desperately need a win.

Calendar Girls 2010, Last week I was contacted by a magazine publisher in the UK who work for a wide variety of airlines including Ryanair. They are working on a project for the airline and thought it would be good to utilise our yachts for the 2010 Ryanair charity calendar. Before I knew it a team of 25 people were flown in from the UK which was made up of 14 female cabin crew, photographers, directors, hair, make up and clothing freelancers.
Calendar Girls 2010: On Sunday night I stayed with the team at Oasis Plantio Golf near to Alicante, this is a new development and the apartments there have been finished to a very high standard. Readers in the Costa Blanca south may have witnessed the intense storm we had last Sunday, this made my journey there rather interesting.
The team were pretty shocked at the ferocity of the storm and thought that it would result in lost shooting time, but as the fallen hail began to warm a sensuous mist rose which in turn created an amazing backdrop for the first lady to be shot in. The calendar will definitely be very sexy but the images used will be sure to keep the girls modesty. The cabin crew members selected for this project come from all over Europe and are all of course, stunning. There were even two ladies that looked like Melanie Sykes and a young Jerry Hall. Some of the cabin crew were more comfortable than others with the amount of skin being shown but all of them loved the attention and make-over.
On day two of the shoot I took some of the team to a secluded beach between La Marina and Guardamar. We rose early and travelled as a convoy to get to the location by sunrise. There was a hive of activity as the ladies were prepared for their individual sessions and I do not think I have ever seen so much make up in one place before! The make up artists Martin and Crystal did a spectacular job with the ladies, as did Jo who provided the clothes, shoes and accessories. As an amateur photographer I found exhilarating to watch the main photographer, John, in action. He was happy to give me advice and his two assistants were also very informative. The result of that day was some amazing shots of the ladies on the beach, in the dunes and woodland, this calendar is going to be hot!
Day three was spent on our yachts and once all the equipment and team members had boarded, we set sail for Cabo Roig. It was challenging to shoot whilst the boats were anchored up but everyone was very professional and John has already chosen a beautiful picture to use in the calendar. Sadly, the weather turned and the rain emptied the beaches whilst the team were shooting on a dangerous looking precipice. The last day was spent in El Campello where all 15 cabin crew were utilised for single and group pictures. They all looked so glamorous and it was amazing how much work went on behind the scenes.
The final result will be available for all to see at the end of the year when the calendars will be on sale. The effort that went in to this project and the talent that was used will ensure that this calendar will be a classy and sexy product. As the proceeds go to charity I suggest you buy one for a loved one this Christmas!

TEHRAN: Iran tested two short-range missiles as its elite Revolutionary Guards began several days of war games on Sunday, state television reported. The channel said the tests also included a multiple missile launcher. "Iran tests two short-range missiles," the television said in a scrolling headline. It earlier said new missiles had been tested, without giving details. Last May, Iran said it had tested a missile that defense analysts say could hit Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf.

Tawny Kitaen, Actress and reality show star Tawny Kitaen was taken into custody at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon after Newport Beach, California police stopped the Range Rover that she was driving. She was transported to jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Sgt. Shontel Sherwood.
Kitaen is best known for her appearances in several heavy metal videos for the band Whitesnake. She also appeared in the 1984 Tom Hanks movie Bachelor Party. Her latest television gig, which began in October 2008, was on season two of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Prior to that, she entered a six-month court ordered rehab program in exchange for dismissal of a 2006 felony cocaine possession charge.
Tawny’s troubles go even farther back. In April 2002 she was arrested for spousal abuse and battery against her St. Louis Cardinals husband, pitcher Chuck Finley. He filed for divorce three days later, ending their five year marriage. The couple have two daughters, Wynter and Raine.

Roman Polanski, MARCH 11–It’s been 26 years since Roman Polanski’s arrest for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, but the director’s Oscar nomination and the success of his film “The Pianist” has again focused attention on the March 1977 crime that prompted his French exile.
Polanski, 69, will not discuss the case and his victim, Samantha Geimer, now 39, has recently said that the sex assault should not color his chances with Academy Award voters. But that, of course, does not lessen the severity of the crime, which is graphically detailed in the following grand jury testimony, which was quietly unsealed four months ago by L.A. Superior Court Judge David Wesley.
Two weeks after Polanski plied her with Champagne and a Quaalude, Samantha Gailey appeared before an L.A. grand jury and recalled Polanski’s predatory behavior in a Mulholland Canyon home owned by Jack Nicholson.
The teenager’s troubling–and contemporaneous–account of her abuse at Polanski’s hands begins with her posing twice for topless photos that the director said were for French Vogue. The girl then told prosecutors how Polanski directed her to, “Take off your underwear” and enter the Jacuzzi, where he photographed her naked. Soon, the director, who was then 43, joined her in the hot tub. He also wasn’t wearing any clothes and, according to Gailey’s testimony, wrapped his hands around the child’s waist.
The girl testified that she left the Jacuzzi and entered a bedroom in Nicholson’s home, where Polanski sat down beside her and kissed the teen, despite her demands that he “keep away.” According to Gailey, Polanski then performed a sex act on her and later “started to have intercourse with me.” At one point, according to Gailey’s testimony, Polanski asked the 13-year-old if she was “on the pill,” and “When did you last have your period?” Polanski then asked her, Gailey recalled, “Would you want me to go in through your back?” before he “put his penis in my butt.” Asked why she did not more forcefully resist Polanski, the teenager told Deputy D.A. Roger Gunson, “Because I was afraid of him.”
Following his indictment on various sex charges, Polanski agreed to a plea deal that spared him prison time (he had spent about 45 days in jail during a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation). But when it seemed that a Superior Court judge might not honor the deal–and sentence Polanski to prison–the director fled the country.

The movie will be shown October 27 at the Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 in LA for the theater’s grand opening.
The film is a behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson preparing for the series of London shows he was rehearsing for before he died June 25.
The first 500 fans in line have been promised commemorative tickets designed by Jackson for the London concerts. This is the only screening location offering the advance shows and commemorative tickets. This Is It, the movie will begin a limited, two-week run at movie theaters nationwide on October 28, 2009.
The Sony Pictures film is directed by Jackson’s collaborator Kenny Ortega, and was created with hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage. Kenny Ortega directed High School Musical. The movie features Jackson rehearsing, and interviews with his friends and family.
“It was a last-minute decision,” said Trudy Miles, who was waiting in line with her daughters. “We were getting ready to go to the park, and my daughter texted me and told me the tickets were going on sell today. We were going to see it at the theater near our house, but we thought this would be special, so we loaded up the car with stuff and came down here,” she told the Associated Press.

They face off for the final time in their college careers Saturday when the seventh-ranked Tigers travel to Starkville. After 30 years of dominance, the Power I formation is passing out of vogue, and with it the need for those bullish big guys with the 235-pound build and the nasty attitude.
Both Mississippi State and LSU have made the transition to the spread offense, but a few times this weekend Dixon or Scott will likely dig in 7 yards deep with a fullback to lead the way and go on a search for violent contact.
“You’ve got two guys that are hard-nose runners,” Scott said. “It’s old-fashioned SEC football at its best. That’s the best way to put it. This is smashmouth, back-yard football. No holds barred. It’s big on big, man on man.” There was a time when a coach in the Southeastern Conference could build his reputation around a powerful back with a little bit of speed. Players like Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson—guys who could run over or around tacklers depending on their mood.
Instead of carrying the load, Scott and Dixon find themselves taking on situational roles as they meet. Both still have significant roles in their offenses, but are sometimes asked to do very different things than what they were recruited for.
They share time in crowded backfields. Dixon is splitting time with three others, while Scott is giving up carries to Keiland Williams and Trindon Holliday, two smaller backs. Scott recently showed his versatility by catching a touchdown pass but is well off the pace of carries he was getting last season.
“We have flashes of greatness,” Scott said of LSU’s rushing game, which averages 163.7 yards per game. “But I would say the main thing is getting used to the shotgun runs … converting when you’re used to being a two-back guy, then going to a spread offense and running, because it’s a little bit different.”
Dixon, who was suspended for his team’s first game for a drunken driving arrest this summer, hasn’t wasted any time in the two games since the suspension was lifted. He is averaging 107.5 yards per game. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Terry, Miss., native has quickly shown he’s in the best shape of his career both physically and mentally.
Dixon was the centerpiece of Sylvester Croom’s power-running West Coast offense and entered the season as Mississippi State’s career rushing attempts and touchdowns leader. With 2,818 yards, he needs just 3 to move into second place on the career rushing list.
He has fit in well with Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen’s spread offense so far and appears poised to pass Jerious Norwood’s 3,212 yards by the end of the season, achieving a goal he set four years ago.
“When I first got here I set out to be the best,” Dixon said. “It feels good to know I’m moving toward that way, but at same time I just want to do my job and win this game. If that requires me to break this record then that’s what’s up, that’s what I want to do.”
Scott, a 6-0, 234-pound Saline, La., native, is nearing the 2,000-yard mark for his career as he tries to become the fourth LSU tailback to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Scott had 18 touchdowns last season, picking up two along with 141 yards in a 34-24 win over Mississippi State last year.
Fittingly his scores came on power dives from 1-yard out.
Though their teams are turning to the spread, some of the personnel on each team look forward to a chance to become more physical this weekend. Defensive tackle Kyle Love, for one, can’t wait till he sees Scott standing in the backfield.
“I enjoy watching Charles Scott play,” Love said. “Really, he’s one of my favorite runnings backs in the SEC or the nation because he’s a guy who has one tempo, that’s full speed, straight downhill. He don’t care if his offensive line is in the way, your linebackers, the D Line. He don’t care who’s there. He’s going to make sure he’s going to run through you.”
Mullen doesn’t think we’ve seen the last of the power backs. We may just have to wait a while for the next group to come along.
“Offense is always cyclical,” Mullen said. “I think the key is to be a little bit ahead of the curve maybe. I think you’ll see as more teams go to spread and the defense goes to a design to stop the spread, you’ll see more teams go back to Power I or Wishbone offenses to counterbalance what the defense is doing.”

She wasn’t always talking about the purse hanging from ladies’ shoulders. She was talking about something a little more personal, says Sharon McGhee, creator of the play, “The Pocketbook Monolgues.”
After seeing the acclaimed production of ‘The Vagina Monologues,” McGhee, news director for WVON radio in Chicago, was inspired to bring stories from African American women to the stage.“ The Pocketbook Monologues” tour comes to the Ferst Center for the Arts tonight.
The monologues are presented as reading theater, in which the actors read and perform stories that relate to womanhood and sexuality.
“Pocketbook,”McGhee says, is homage to elder African American women, who created the more polite term long ago.
“You knew this conversation was taking place below the naval and above the knees, but it wasn’t vulgar,” She says, referring to the play.
Still, after seeing disturbing numbers in HIV and AIDs cases in the black community, McGhee was driven to find a platform to address the problem.
“We need the freedom to do discuss sexuality and intimacy so we can get a handle on what is happening with us,” she says. “First of all you need to keep your pocketbook closed. But you know at some point the pocketbook is gonna be opened, and you want to protect it when you do. Big Mama or an auntie will say, ‘Child don’t let someone ramble all in your pocketbook, show some discretion about the choices you make.”
McGhee calls on local talent in each city. The Atlanta show includes Lisa Wu Hartwell and Kandi Burruss, from Bravo TV’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta;” and radio personalities Myra J and Shirley Strawberry.
“I’ll be a 'closed pocketbook,' ” says Wu Hartwell during a break from her reality show. “She is a woman who falls in love with a guy that’s in jail."
“Sometimes we have in our mind what we want our men to be," she adds. "We think that we are going to fall in love with a certain type, but you never know when it happens, and you can’t really control your feelings.”
Veteran actress Ella Joyce performs two characters as women of wisdom in the show, and appeared in “The Vagina Monologues.” She says that she understands the need for a production that focuses on women of color.
We all [women of different races] deal with the same sexist issues,” Joyce says. “But [African American women's] self-esteem is much different, because of how we grow up as Americans. Being females of color vs. a white female, you are treated differently in this country whether people admit it or not.”
McGhee also performs and says that she ultimately wants young women to recognize their own self-worth.

Hiv Vaccine, A medical trial in Thailand has raised hopes of a major breakthrough in the fight against Aids after scientists said an experimental vaccine had reduced the risk of HIV infection by a third.
The world’s largest HIV/Aids vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers was the first in which infection has been prevented, according to the US army, which sponsored the trial with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
A combination of two vaccines was tested on HIV-negative Thai men and women aged 18 to 30 at average risk of becoming infected. All the volunteers were given counselling and condoms to help them avoid HIV. Then half were randomly picked to receive the vaccine, while the other half got dummy shots. Until the trial ended, nobody knew who had been given the genuine vaccine and who had not.
A relatively small number of people became infected with HIV – 51 of the 8,197 people given the vaccine, and in 74 of the 8,198 who received dummy shots – but the difference was statistically significant, which means scientists believe it could not have happened by chance. It worked out at a 31% lower risk of infection for the vaccine group.
Colonel Jerome Kim, who helped to lead the $105m (£64m) study for the US army, said it was “the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine”.
Recent failures had led many scientists to believe that such a vaccine might not be achievable. In 2007, the drug company Merck abandoned what had looked at the time like the most promising avenue of research after disappointing trial results. Today the National Institute’s director, Dr Anthony Fauci, warned it was “not the end of the road”, but said he was surprised and very pleased by the outcome.
“It gives me cautious optimism about the possibility of improving this result” he said. “This is something that we can do.”
Every day, 7,000 people worldwide are newly infected with HIV; 2 million died of Aids in 2007, the UN agency Unaids estimates.
The Aids Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, an international group that has worked towards developing a vaccine, welcomed the results of the trial, the third major study since 1983, when HIV was identified as the cause of Aids, as “an historic milestone”.
The executive director, Mitchell Warren, said: “There is little doubt that this finding will energise and redirect the Aids vaccine field.”
Frances Gotch, professor of immunology at Imperial College London said the results appeared to be statistically significant and may have been the effect of the two different vaccines working in tandem to more powerful effect.
“The fact that they have seen a response with people with such a low incidence of infection is impressive,” Gotch, who is also the principal investigator for the International Aids Vaccine Initiative, told the Guardian.
“Of course it’s not 100% of people [protected] but 31% could make an enormous difference in the world. I think this is something we can work with.”
Thailand’s ministry of public health conducted the study, which used strains of HIV common in Thailand.
Scientists stressed it was not known whether such a vaccine would work against other strains elsewhere in the world. The study was done in Thailand because US army scientists carried out pivotal research in that country when the Aids epidemic emerged there, isolating virus strains and providing genetic information on them to vaccine makers.
The study tested a two-vaccine combination in a “prime-boost” approach, where the first one primes the immune system to attack HIV virus, and the second one strengthens the response.
Alvac uses canarypox, a bird virus, altered so it can’t cause human disease, to ferry synthetic versions of three HIV genes into the body. AidsVax contains a genetically engineered version of a protein on HIV’s surface.NEW
It is unclear whether vaccine makers will seek to license the two-vaccine combination in Thailand. Before the trial began, the US Food and Drug Administration said other studies would be needed before the vaccine could be considered for US licensing. The full results of the trial will be presented at an international Aids vaccine conference in Paris in October.
The executive director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, an alliance of major research bodies and funders like the Gates Foundation, said the results showed a vaccine was an achievable goal. “This is a historic day in the 26-year quest to develop an AIDS vaccine,” said Dr Alan Bernstein. “This trial is the first demonstration in humans that, with more research, it will be possible to develop a vaccine that is fully protective against HIV.”
Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust in the UK, said a vaccine, by far the most effective way of tackling serious infectious diseases, was desperately needed. More work was needed, but the promising findings “justify the continuing investments and efforts of the international community, including the UK Government, to develop a vaccine.” END NEW

“This is the first step on a very long road,” said the policy manager, Vicky Sheard.

Despite the odds and a history of borderline contempt for each other, the witches find themselves drawn to each other. And just as quickly drawn to the stranger in town who has caused a stir by buying the Lennox mansion, the Eastwick Inn, the candle factory and the newspaper. Not to mention that he gets right to the business of making their wishes come true.
For Roxie, this means the hint of dangerous sex, a $50,000 commission for a sculpture due to his huge…appreciation for art. Kat is tired of being a wife, mother and nurse and wants someone to take care of her for a change. Joanna wants to find the courage to speak up for herself and get what she really wants. Roxie is the easiest (see what I did there?) as Darryl van Horne invites her over and asks her to sculpt…him. For $50,000. Oh, and spend some time in his bed to get to know his…body. But Roxie remains loyal to Chad.
Shortly thereafter, he invites Joanne to lunch, because he wants her to write an article about him. but what he spends most of his time talking about is how hypnotic her eyes are and if she would just allow herself to claim her own power, she would be able to get just about anything she wanted from men. Joanna soon puts it to the test and is getting everything from promotions to jelly donuts. But when she gets Will to kiss her, she realizes it’s not as real as she wants it to be.
Lastly, he meets Kat as the girls all meet for dinner at the Inn and he joins them, providing them with the special bottled water from the spring under his new house. It gets them all a bit tipsy, enough so that hopping in the fountain outside sounds like a grand idea. Until Kat’s jerkface husband Ray sees them and spoils the party by yelling about her being drunk and how she needs to be a better mother. At their home, she confronts Ray about his disrespect towards her and tells him he has “No spark, no electricity!” – which is when he gets struck my lightening. It echos an earlier scene when she asked if the earth would have to move for him to get off his backside, and sure enough there’s an earthquake that has him jumping to his feet.
Darryl appears at the hospital later, peeking in on Bun, but tells Kat he was there to check on her. She admits that she’s told Ray she wants a divorce and she’s afraid she’ll lose her kids. Which seems unlikely, since he’s the unemployed alcoholic. Either way, Darryl tells her that his fancy New York lawyer is now her fancy New York Lawyer, because it’s time someone took care of her.
Roxie has several precognitive dreams in the episode, including one about her daughter nearly being raped by her boyfriend Gus. At her insistence, Darryl goes with her to the dock where she thinks it is happening and sure enough there is the horrifying scene. Darryl tosses Gus to the mud and threatens to kill him as Roxie comforts Mia. The last dream Roxie has is of a man she’s never met, but feels like she knows intimately…who is trying to kill her. Looks like we have to stay tuned next week for that one!
The cast seems to work well, with the adorable Sara Rue as Joanna’s friend Penny – she has golden comedic timing for the dry zinger and is a joy to watch. Veronica Cartwright is, as always, superb. And Rebecca Romijn (Roxie), Lindsay Price (Joanna) and Jamie Ray Newman (Kat) each seem admirably cast. The one with the real big shoes to fill, of course, is Paul Gross. Obama UN Speech, UNITED NATIONS - President Barack Obama summoned the world to a "a new era of engagement" in his maiden address to the U.N. General Assembly, offering a litany of policy shifts intended to distinguish his administration from that of predecessor George W. Bush.
"The people of the world want change," Obama told U.N. delegates. "They will not long tolerate those who are on the wrong side of history."
Obama tried to show that the United States had no interest in a go-it-alone stance on international issues, but he said in essence that he expected plenty in return for reaching out.

Based on the audience reaction to her performance and interaction with her parents immediately afterward, Kelly might just be this season’s fan favorite. In her exit interview Kelly gushed, “That was the most fun I ever had.”

Judge Melissa Jackson remanded Brown to the custody of the state earlier today. The Brooklyn bred rapper will remain detained until her next hearing on September 7th. Brown (born Inga Marchand) was booked at the Manhattan criminal court but where she will serve time is currently unknown.
Brown, who was on probation for assaulting two manicurists in Manhattan’s Bloomie Nails in 2004, was warned by judge Jackson in March that if she got into any trouble with the law, she would be sent to jail for a year.
Last week, the New York City department of probation filed a violation report against Brown after she was charged with assault for hitting her Brooklyn neighbor with her cell phone. A day after, Brown would be arrested for giving police false information after traffic stop. Another legal issue which worked against Brown was her failure to cooperate with authorities in June after she was attacked and robbed by three women.
Foxy Brown is also facing charges of battery and obstruction of justice for allegedly spitting and throwing hair glue at a Florida beauty store employee in February. She reportedly also struggled with an arresting police officer.
In related news, Brown recently revealed that she is pregnant with her first child and has plans to marry soon. She was also planning to release a street album titled Brooklyn’s Don Diva via her Black Rose Entertainment, distributed through Koch, in December.

Pakistan Vs West Indies: Flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi will lead the Pakistan team in their Champions Trophy opener against the West Indies today (Wednesday) as regular skipper Younis Khan has been ruled out due to a hand injury.
Younis, who suffered a hairline fracture in his right index finger during a warm up match against Sri Lanka at Benoni three days back, is, however, likely to be fit for Pakistan's second match against arch-rivals India on Saturday.
His unavailability for the match paves the way for vice-captain Afridi to take on the mantle of leading the One-day side for the first time in his career.
Meanwhile, Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam insisted that the Younis' injury is not very serious.
"It's a hairline fracture. However the injury is not serious. We hope he will be fit to play against India," he said.
Younis did not play in the second warm up match on Saturday due to the same injury.

But hey, first the good: NCIS executive producer Shane Brennan tells me that for viewers who are in love with the duo — and I know there are lots of you — “the last four episodes of the season are going to be amazing. They will not believe what’s in store for these characters. We focus on Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) in a way that we haven’t focused on them in six seasons!
“I’m very serious,” he adds. “They carry the last four episodes in a way that is really, really shocking, and in a way, the audience will not see any of this coming.”
Okay, you’ve got my attention. Now tell me more. “It starts with part one of “Legend” on April 28, which is the spin-off episode,” Brennan says. “Now, having said that, it doesn’t really start in part one. We’ve been sowing the seeds of this for some time. And the audience is aware there’s a character out there called Michael Rifkin (Merik Tadros), because he was introduced in the first episode of Season 6. And they know Tony’s aware of Michael’s existence. So let’s just say, in the last four episodes, Michael makes his appearance in a big way.
“You’ve got what you might want to call a triangle,” he continues. “It’s a triangle with very, very pointy ends. Someone’s going to get hurt.”
As in, um, dead hurt? “Something tragic will happen to Tony,” Brennan confirms. “Something tragic will happen to Ziva as well. It’s one of those arcs that has been building and building and building for so long that we decided it really deserved to be featured in a big way. It’s emotionally and physically explosive.”
“Physically explosive” doesn’t sound good. But the boss won’t reveal whether anyone, much less either of Tiva’s portrayers, is on their way out. “Possibly,” he teases. “I won’t take it any further than that.”

His roles in That 70s Show and development of the MTV show Punk’d (which is being kind of reborn with Ustream) allowed him to become a movie star. But these days he seems more interested in using the web to further his career. His recent race with CNN to be the first user with a million Twitter followers was just one facet of what he’s doing online. He also has his own web-based show Blah Girls. But now he’s sending that the opposite way: Back to television.
Katalyst Media, the production company Kutcher runs with Jason Goldberg, has signed a deal with CBS Television Distribution (CTD) to distribute Blah Girls on television. Specifically, the show will run as one-minute interstitials between segments on the entertainment magazine show, The Insider. While the show has run on the web since its launch during TechCrunch50 last June, a television distribution deal has always been a part of the broader goal for the content. And CBS has a larger development deal with Katalyst Media, so this is simply an extension of that.
Still, it’s a bit odd that Kutcher is taking the show to television after going on and on about how his race to a million followers showed that individuals could trump huge media conglomerates. And he beat CNN, but he still apparently needs CBS. Why? Because there’s money there of course, and it’s still tough to monetize an online video venture.

Individually, the announcers (Tirico, Kornheiser, Theismann) are good, but I am not sure how the team dynamic works. Joe Theismann, a former player, has decent insight, but tends to fall in love with the sound of his own voice and talk over his colleagues. How he mixes with Kornheiser (a favorite of mine as a columnist, radio personality and TV commentator) might not work and fall flat. Tony Kornheiser, as a judge on that reality ESPN wanna-be-a-Sportscneter anchor show, was way out of his element. But on radio, his extemporaneous comments were brilliant and often controversial. In fact, once he was suspended for an on-air comment. Mike Tirico is quietly one of the best play-by-play men around (he does NBA and college sports). He has class, a smooth style and knows how to let the moment be the star. My sense is he’ll be able to bring out the best in his new colleagues. Tirico did a good job bringing out the limited warmth from Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick during the Super Bowl XL coverage. Well, it’s no Dandy Don and Howard Cosell, but it could be interesting.

Atlanta Flooding, metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, led to floods that killed two people, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said Monday.
Another person was reported missing, said Dena Brummer.
About 100 miles north, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, one person was swept into rushing water and is presumed drowned, said Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency in Nashville.
And in Chattooga County northwest of Atlanta, concerns that a levee might fail led 300 people to evacuate their homes in the city of Trion, where authorities opened a shelter for them in a church, Brummer said.
The problems came after days of persistent rain soaked a region that just recently was gripped by a seemingly unrelenting drought.
“Conditions are dangerous,” Brummer said about the waters, which have left most of metro Atlanta subject to flash floods. “We are encouraging people to stay at home and to stay off the roads if they can.”

Andree Bejjani, The naked body of a young female resident of a high-end condominium in the Essex House on Central Park South was found in her bedroom with a knife sticking out of her neck Saturday afternoon.
The victim, Andree Bejjani, was hung with the ceiling with a rope. The 44-year old Bejjani was slaughtered with 10-inch bread knife and the knife was still in her neck when the police found he body. The victim is believed to be from Lebanon and she was renting the 10th-floor condominium in Jumeirah Essex House hotel.
Police has arrested the house manager, Derrick Praileau, as a suspect in the incident. In a video camera recording of the 10th floor, Derrick was seen entering into the room in the Saturday morning. Police has not charged him yet but his statements are implicating him with then incident.
Bejjani, who use the name Sara, was last seen alive this Friday. Purpose of her visit was business. Her only relatives in America told the press that he has not enough courage to inform her family about her death.

McGrew looked splendid in a strapless white gown with gold embroidering and a large bow and short train in the back.
Her six bridesmaids wore simple champagne-colored strapless dresses.
Manning and his six groomsmen wore khaki suits with open collar white button-down shirts and white roses in their lapels. The groomsmen went tieless, but Manning wore a blue-and-white-striped tie.
Moments before the ceremony, Peyton, a quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, slung his arm around his brother and whispered words of encouragement in his ear.
Guests were ferried to the beach in golf carts and were served white wine, Veuve Cliquot champagne and sparkling water by white tuxedoed waiters as they filed into white folding chairs decorated with gold ribbons.
A trio - a guitarist, violinist and cellist - played the wedding march.
"Welcome to one of the most beautful weddings I have ever presided over," the minister said, opening the ceremony.
The quarterback and his gal smiled and giggled throughout the 16 minute ceremony.
As the minister talked about joining the couple's hands in marriage, he looked down at the Giant's mitts. "These hands," he quipped, "are quite large."
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails beachside with appetizers and a full bar laid out on tables adorned with pink tablecloths and roses.
As the wedding party posed for pictures at the altar, McGrew fussed with Manning's hair and kised him on the lips.
Some guests estimated the wedding cost Manning around $500,000, a modest sum compared to most celebrity weddings.
Hours before the ceremony, Manning worked out pre-wedding jitters, hitting the gym by 10 a.m., running furiously on the treadmill, lifting weights and doing push-ups for an hour and and a half.
During the rest of the day, the Super Bowl MVP and his bride stood by the old adage that the groom not see the bride the day of the wedding.
They split their crew into two groups, with McGrew sunning herself on the resort's Vista Pool and Manning joining his brothers Peyton and Cooper and their pals at another pool across the grounds.
Manning wore an orange ballcap and sunglasses at his bride's suggestion so he wouldn't get more sunburned.
While the pals kept the beers flowing, Manning drank water and floated on an inner-tube in the middle of his friends.
And Peyton held court, telling jokes and stories about his baby brother from back home and his days at the University of Mississippi, while the crowd roared with laughter.
The guys finally left the pool around 4 p.m., about two hours before the wedding ceremony, after the wedding planner coaxed them out of the water.
As brides tend to do, McGrew had started getting ready much earlier, working on her hair and makeup regimen indoors with her bridesmaids around 2 p.m.
Manning's parents, Archie and Olivia Manning, were overjoyed to see their youngest son get hitched.
Archie gave a heartfelt toast Friday night before a rehearsal dinner in front of the resort's old Spanish Mission Chapel, getting tears in his eyes as he raised his glass.
Manning and McGrew met when they were students at Ole Miss. He proposed last March during a quiet date in Hoboken.
The couple is famously low-key and kept their wedding plans under wraps until just last week.
Wedding guests remarked all weekend about how relaxed Manning had made the celebration for all of them.
The bride and groom chose the ultra exclusive resort to celebrate their wedding after vacationing here several times.
They plan to spend another week honeymooning at the resort.

The specific molecules in pomegranate extract are called hydroxylated polyphenols (which break down into polyphenols and ellagic acid). As Dr. Susser explained, Hydroxylated polyphenols have shown great promise as powerful antioxidants helping to protect us against premature ageing associated with free radical damage.
Ellagic acid has been shown to be effective in both treating and preventing cancer. It treats cancer by binding to carcinogens and helping initiate apoptosis (programmed cell death). Shane Mosley, He’s scaled every mountain there was to climb in boxing. He’s fought his way to world championships at lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight, became known as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing and has become a household name to boxing enthusiasts. It would be easy for “Sugar” Shane Mosley to be a content man. But Mosley will not be content until he climbs back to the top of the mountain again, which means winning another world championship at 147 pounds – an amazing feat for any fighter, but one in line with the hallowed “Sugar” name, shared by Mosley with the legendary “Sugars”, Robinson and Leonard. Mosley has consistently overcome the odds since turning pro. Despite not having the hype around him afforded to some of his peers, Mosley came up the hard way, fought the best competition, won his fights, and eventually won three world titles, earning the 1998 Fighter of the Year award along the way.
By that time, casual sports fans would be calling Mosley an “overnight sensation”, but “Sugar”’s road to the top was anything but smooth. Born in Lynwood, California in September, 1971, and boxing since the tender age of eight, Shane was a three-time National Amateur champion and a 1992 Olympic team member, in compiling an amateur record of 250+ wins. Upon leaving the amateur ranks, he was labeled a “can’t miss” prospect for stardom.
Mosley showed brilliance in his professional debut, a five round blowout of former California State champion Greg Puente on February 11, 1993, and the future looked bright for this latter-day “Sugar”. Unfortunately, promotional difficulties plagued his early career, and the boxing world would not take notice of Mosley until he brought a 23-0 record (22 knockouts) into the ring against IBF lightweight champion Phillip Holiday. Displaying speed, power, and ring savvy, Mosley thrashed Holiday over 12 rounds and walked away with a world title. He followed up this win with an 11th round knockout of tough Manuel Gomez.
Mosley’s subsequent title defenses caught an unsuspecting boxing public by surprise. Knockout after knockout piled up, as did the accolades from the media. HBO commentator and world champion Roy Jones Jr. proclaimed, after Mosley knocked out John John Molina, “He’s the best lightweight in history, maybe after Roberto Duran.”
In 1998, Mosley defended his title five times, winning all by knockout. This amazing twelve months led the Boxing Writers Association of America to name “Sugar” Shane “Fighter of the Year”. As BWAA president Chris Thorne said, “Sugar brought a lot of class to boxing in 1998. He deserves all accolades he’s receiving.”
These accolades later included being named the 13th best lightweight of all-time by The Ring Magazine. Mosley continued his reign of terror in 1999, defending his title two more times by knockout before difficulties making the 135 pound limit proved tougher than any opponent. While it would have been simpler for Shane to move up five pounds to junior welterweight, “Sugar” wanted to go to where the toughest opponents were: welterweight.
It was at welterweight that the most notable win of the first half of Shane’s career occurred, when on June 17, 2000, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, he clearly outboxed cross-town rival Oscar De La Hoya and won the WBC Welterweight Title.
It was only the third fight at 147 pounds for Mosley, a move many critics questioned, and those critics weren’t silenced even after resounding wins over Wilfredo Rivera and Willy Wise at welterweight. De La Hoya, though, found out what power boxing is all about on that night in the Staples Center before 20,000 rabid boxing fans.
Power boxing is the concept that Shane and his father Jack developed, taking advantage of Shane’s superb conditioning and extraordinarily high punch output.
The fight with De La Hoya was close at the midway point, but Shane picked up the pace considerably in the second half of the fight. Many experts believe Shane swept rounds 7 through 12, but there was no doubt when the bout was over that Shane was the new King of the Welterweights.
De La Hoya declined an immediate rematch, so Mosley sought the best competition he could find. Antonio Diaz was one of the toughest men in the division, but Shane was better in every area and stopped him in the sixth round on Nov. 11, 2000. “Shane is good, real good,” Diaz said. “He’s the best I’ve ever seen.”
The following March, Shane dismantled Australian Shannan Taylor, who had been highly regarded by the media. Many felt he would provide Shane a stiff test, but that was not to be. Taylor wasn’t nearly as fast or as strong as Shane, who stopped him in the sixth round on March 10, 2001, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
He then cut down former junior middleweight Adrian Stone on July 21, needing only three rounds to stop the bigger man.
By then, he was universally regarded as one of the top three pound-for-pound fighters in boxing and was considered the best by a large number of experts.
Shane, who turned 30 on September 7, 2001, proved his champion’s heart by calling out Vernon Forrest, who was the best available 147-pounder.
The two had been amateur rivals and fought a nip-and-tuck battle in the finals of the 1992 Olympic Trials that went Forrest’s way.
When they met as pros at Madison Square Garden, they were considered the two best 147-pounders in the world.
Shane’s power boxing allowed him to dominate the first round, but things turned in the second. An accidental head butt in the second round turned the fight around and Forrest went on to score a decision. Later in the year, Mosley was again unable to solve Forrest, in what will go down as one the best fight series of the year.
Mosley put his frustrating 2002 behind him though, and after a no contest with former world champion Raul Marquez on February 8, 2003, Sugar Shane returned to the win column in a big way on September 13, 2003, when he scored a hard fought unanimous decision over De La Hoya in their long anticipated rematch, earning the WBC and WBA junior middleweight titles in the process.
And though an easy win or two would have been a fitting reward for such a victory, Mosley kept his warrior’s reputation intact by fighting the toughest possible opponent in his next fight, the much-avoided Winky Wright. The two boxing superstars would engage in two exciting bouts on March 13 and November 20 of 2004, and though Wright would win both fights via decision, many boxing observers believed “Sugar” Shane had done enough to win the rematch.
Undeterred by this chain of events, Mosley was back in the gym with new trainer John David Jackson (a former world champion himself) almost immediately. His new goal: to move back down to welterweight and dominate the division again.
The first step on that mission took place on April 23, 2005, when Mosley made a triumphant return to 147 pounds with a lopsided ten round decision over rugged contender David Estrada.
Another clear cut victory, this one over previously unbeaten knockout artist Jose Luis Cruz, came on September 17, and it was clear that these wins not only re-established Mosley in the division, but ensured an exciting run at welterweight in the coming months.
Most recently, Shane defeated Fernando Vargas during the February 25, 2006 HBO Pay-Per-View watched by over 400,000 viewers. Shane won by TKO in the 10th round.

Obama highlighted Muslims' commitment to collecting and distributing charity and said his administration was "working to ensure that Muslims are able to fulfil their charitable obligations not just during Ramadan, but throughout the year."
In her own message, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stressed that Eid celebrations at the White House, pioneered by her husband Bill Clinton in 1996 when he was president, ensured that "all faiths have a home here in the United States”.
"This time of self-reflection reminds us that the values of Islam -- charity, community, cooperation, compassion -- are values which we hold dear as Americans and which have contributed so much to American culture," Obama's top diplomat said.
